Church celebrates 150th anniversary

Leavenworth, Kan. —

Even though the official anniversary was last month, a rural Leavenworth church will be celebrating its 150th anniversary this weekend.

The Rev. Vernon Welkner, pastor of High Prairie Church, said there will be a special service Sunday. There also will be celebratory church picnic.

Church officials considered Aug. 22 to have been the 150th anniversary. Records show land was deeded to the trustees of what was then called the High Prairie Presbyterian Cumberland Church Aug. 22, 1861.

The church moved more than once. Welkner believes an 1895 structure at the church’s current location at Eisenhower Road and 187th Street is the fourth building to be used by the congregation. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A new sanctuary was built in the 1990s, but the 1895 building is still used a lot, Welkner said.

The church also has gone through name changes. For years, it was called the Gospel Tabernacle of High Prairie.

Today, the church is non-denominational and has a congregation of about 150 people.

“Most of them have rural ties in the Leavenworth County area,” Welkner said.

Welkner called High Prairie Church a “country church with a big country heart.”

“These folks have a very good nature to them,” he said.

He said they love being together, and visitors feel welcome at the church.

My childhood church turned 150 this year! Wow, that's a serious milestone. I spent many a wonderful day in this church with my family. I have yet to find a church that can even come close to the sense of community and fellowship of High Prairie.

(8) a bad habit :: Yeah, so ... I'm really bad about wearing my glasses. I squint at the computer screen more and more everyday, but somehow that does not make me reach into my bag to grab for my glasses. It's ridiculous. I even purchased brand new glasses that are titanium and so light that I barely feel them on my face ... and still no. Bad. Bad. Bad!

rained out

Every now and then I spy a Groupon that I feel is worth purchasing, I am not one of those people that goes totally overboard to get a deal. I tend to purchase experience type of things - chocolate and pasta making classes, photobooks and etc. Today I was supposed to be at a photography class that I purchased and it's been raining since the moment I got up. There was not a whole lot of information about the class on the website - just what you should know (iso, wb, metering...), what to bring and where to meet. The confirmation did note that the class 'could' be cancelled due to weather, but I had no correspondence today at all. I called and texted the instructor and emailed the Chimpsy site where the class is scheduled, but got no answer or call back. I'm a little disappointed about that. About an hour before the class, I went back to the website where I booked and "cancelled" the class, but they only have two more available - neither of which I can make. What to do now? I may just be out some $$. booooooooooo

missoni for target - wow!

I would not describe myself as obsessed by fashion, but... every once in a while I find something that really peaks my interest. With my recent obsession with chevron prints, the new Missoni line for Target certainly got my attention. It had a fair amount of press, but having never really paid much attention to the limited release lines at Target, I had no idea what kind of demand there is for these items. I woke up around 6:30 this morning and surfed the Target site on my phone and knowing that I couldn't really purchase till 7am, I didn't really do much else till then. Well the Target site crashed in epic fashion!

I thought oh boy, this isn't going to be good. I got myself ready while checking the site every now and then, to no avail. I decided to pop into my local store before work to see what I could pick up there. I arrived about 8:25 to find most of the shelves with one or two lonely items left and check out lines backed up with carts overflowing with colorful chevron patterned goodies. Boo. I had hoped to pick up a few of these fun things ....

Target1

Any of these would have been great - most specifically that throw!! Seems that was the hottest of the hot items and some stores didn't even get any in stock. The Target employees said they would likely restock, but later in the day they seem to have changed their tune. Clearly Target underestimated the demand on this product in a huge way!

Screen_shot_2011-09-13_at_11

Back in the office I kept trying to get online and sadly ended up looking at the little Target dog most of the day. Once I finally was able to sign on - everything I wanted was sold out. No stores show availability either. So I wonder if they really will get more product on the shelves or online in the next month or if folks will have to purchase what they wanted from ebay. Currently there are over 16,000 items listed on ebay from the Missoni for Target collection. This is the most disgusting thing to me!! No matter how bad I want that throw, I will NOT pay four times the price because someone went in the store and hoarded product to put on ebay. I wish there was a way to figure out how to stop people from doing this ... like concert and sport tickets too!

Target2

The good news... I was able to pick up a few items and will keep checking with my local stores to see if anyone returns one of those throws! The three ladies in front of me in line purchased over $700 worth of merchandise EACH! Does anyone need that much chevron?? Um... no. I am hoping there are enough of these types that will have some buyers remorse and return some of the stuff I wanted. And if not ... well then it wasn't meant to be!

10 on 10 :: September 2011

Hello!  Hello!  Happy 10 on 10 on a weekend!!  I'm always so excited when the 10th falls on a day that I am not in my office - there is only so much to photograph there ... So much easier to find beauty in my city and my travels!!

9

9 AM :: leaving Chicago and heading to Indiana to spend the day with the Pittman's - I never tire of the Chicago skyline... it's even more dreamy with a little fog

10

10 AM :: Still on the road to Chesterton ... it was raining and the sun was shining at the same time. Can anyone explain this? Just seems wrong to me! Oh and I love the old Skyway signage!

11

11 AM :: Bella B shows her cheer spirit at the Trojans game! Now, we didn't have these mini football games complete with cheerleaders when I was a kid, but they are darn cute!

12

12 PM :: Second half of the game ... Bella's still got the spirit. Sadly neither team scored any points on the field.

13

1 PM :: Hit the European market to pick up those rosemary flatbreads I love so much! No trip to Chesterton is complete without bringing these home with me!! I love their little market - even picked up some French macarons that were very good. And how delicious do these cupcakes look??

14

2 PM :: Arrived at the annual Popcorn fest!! Had to get kettle corn and found some adorable little pet toys and holiday decor at a couple of the booths. We buzzed through super quick because there were some sort of flying ant and bees EVERYWHERE. Holly and I were both pulling bugs out of our hair, it was the most disgusting thing!

15

3 PM :: Finally got Holly's elephant ear - tried on our way in, but they had run out of sugar! Oops! It was super good - worth the wait for sure.

16

4 PM :: Linus, one of their three dogs, the most adorable great dane. She truly is a gentle giant ...

17

5 PM :: Slip n' Slide

18

6 PM :: Still at it ... Don't you sometimes miss being a kid?

19

7 PM :: Decided to stop off by the museum campus to watch the sun go down behind the city. This is one of my favorite views of the skyline and you can just sit along the lake, people watch, snap a photo or two, enjoy the breeze and watch the lights come on as the sun sets. Lovely.

21

Hope you had a wonderful day filled with sun, fun, family and friends! So long Summer...

dîner en blanc . chicago

L1000682

Chicago's first dȊner en blanc took place last night in the heart of the city, Daley Plaza.  It was the most beautiful night for The White Pique Nique! (http://dinerenblancchicago.com/)  The idea is something out of Paris and has started popping up in other large cities around the world.  It's a bit of flash mob meets picnic.

L1000650

We sat up our tables and as we heard the church bells ring in the eight o'clock hour, we got up and waved our napkins to signal the beginning of dinner.  Pretty funny to see people with a napkin in one hand and camera in the other... hence the fuzzy photo.  : )

I wasn't sure exactly what to expect of the whole event.  From seeing photos of other city versions, I was certainly intrigued and not quite sure how it all worked, but excited.  I had to buy a new table, chairs and a cover for my very colorful tote bag - since everything was to be white.   I already had a white dress, shoes and plenty of tableware to choose from.  Just had to pull it all together and figure out a way to pack it to get it downtown and not break anything!

I planned a French inspired menu of fresh baguette with beurre salé, salad, lemon chicken & rosemary potatoes and chocolate macaron and chocolate ganache crepes.  Everything turned out great, but if I do this again next year... I will drastically change how I pack things.  And will need to consider a menu that is better suited to be eaten cold.  A learning curve this year for sure!

We were told to set up our tables so that they touch - to create the uniform look of one large table - and that makes for some tight quarters.  We were on the end, so only had one couple next to us - the were not particularly chatty, but quite nice.  I think for it to be really enjoyable, you need to have a group of four to six friends that can sit together.

What I found odd about the whole thing is that there was really no agenda.  Set up in rows like we tell you, swing your napkin to ring in dinner and be gone by 10:30.  That's it.  There was a little music - a guy playing the accordion while we ate and then a three-piece band about 9.  Some folks got up and danced, but mostly people mingled around the plaza and took photos of tables and people climbing on the Picasso sculpture.  And, there was no real ending to the whole thing ... some people packed up as early as 9:30 and then a few more and a few more. We decided to pack it in around 10ish.

Overall the event was fun - I mean, how many people can say they had a picnic in Daley Plaza?  And it was an absolutely beautiful night.  Just another adventure in the city!
