can a picky eater be a food snob ?!?

L1000462

I had the funniest dining experience yesterday. I was at this new kind of gourmet food court and decided on a crepe. The girl behind the counter couldn't have been older than 20 and clearly had no idea how to really make a french crepe. This despite the fact that she had all of the right instruments at her disposal. The awesome cooking surface, long spatula and etc. Watching her make a crepe was painful. She didn't know how to do the swirl of the batter with the little wooden blade and when she went to take the crepe off of the cook surface she took it off whole and draped it over a plate that was smaller than the crepe itself. She then proceeded to fill it to the brim with berries and then folded it with her hand. P A I N F U L if you have ever seen a real French crepe made. The restaurant is new. She's young. But I found myself thinking about having crepes made on the street in Paris ... and thought, sheesh what a mess.

My travels have really made me a bit of a food snob. And that's quite funny, considering I am such a picky eater. Seriously ... the pickiest eater you might ever meet. That said, of the things I do eat ... the must be the best. No Hershey chocolate for me - it's got to be dark and rich and, in many cases, from some foreign land to be good. I am obsessed with French butter, there is simply nothing like it. Gelato is not the same anywhere outside of Italy. And there is certainly American fare that cannot be duplicated abroad...

It's funny where life takes us and how that journey transforms us. Food for thought. * wink *

10 on 10 :: August 2011

Hooray it's the 10th and that means it's time for the 10 on 10 Challenge!  I almost forgot, but saw Yepallmine's post on Twitter this morning just as I was checking all of my social media and having breakfast!  Wheew!  Would have been totally bummed if I had missed it. Even though it was "just another day at the office."

Lr-1000433

8 AM : started the day on Google+ even thought the only active participants seem to be photographers ... not sure why that is the case.  I still find myself mostly on Facebook and Twitter these days... Are you on Google+?  Do you use it?  If so, add me  !!

Lr-1000436

9 AM : I rode my bike to work for the first time EVER and seriously about killed myself.  I will admit I am much more of a "cruiser" when it comes to biking.  You know, a stroll along the lake to enjoy the weather and the sights.  I am not a "biker" and with all of my health problems, I am horribly out of shape.  By the time I got to the office, I felt like I was going to pass out ... lots of water and slowly walking around the office to catch my breath again.  Ridiculously sad shape, I tell you!!!

Lr-1000439

10 AM :  That's my Townie among the other bikes in the office - for some strange cosmic reason, everyone decided to ride their bike today.  And as funny as that was - my boss forgot about a meeting he had mid day and had to ride his bike there.  Good thing his is the carbon fiber job in the foreground and he is the next Lance Armstrong.  If that had been me, I would have called a cab!!!

Lr-1000438

11 AM :  Picking colors for a new project that I am working on.  Something only a designer can appreciate.  : )

Lr-1000443

12 : It was simply the perfect day outside today - mid 70's, no humidity, a few puffy clouds.  I attempted to have lunch on the deck, but was attacked by all sorts of bug life - first a wasp then some horse fly the size of Texas and the final straw, a cicada!!  Back inside...

Lr-1000440

1 PM : CPK leftovers for lunch ... not great, but it was something.

Lr-1000444

2 PM : Loving my new Puma's I picked up while in San Francisco.  These are seriously the most comfortable fashion sneaker I've ever had.  They are light as a feather, but actually have some padding on the bottom.  Oh and super breathable too!  { love }

Lr-1000446

3 PM : Got a sample vinyl message that will be put on a mirror at a client office - they have some sloppy people ... apparently we do to!  drip.  drip.

Lr-1000448

4 PM : This fraction to decimal chart is my lifesaver!  I've had it for 16 years and use it almost daily.  You'd think I would have committed this to memory by now ... but sadly no.

Lr-1000451

5 PM : (well more like 5:45ish) I hit the road home and took the long route via the lake.  Terrible view huh?  That's the city of Chicago there in the distance.  The winds were from the east over the lake so we were getting lots of splashes along the rocks.  Pretty to look at and listen to.

6 PM : Lingered long enough to creep into the next hour so thought I'd take a selfie to say hello!  I shot all square format with my new Leica D-Lux 5 - it's a dream of a little camera!  Hope you had a super day!  I'm now off to see all of your 10 on 10 sets!!

san francisco : by bus

The next morning I woke up to more fog. Joy! I had booked a bus tour for 10am - not good - and rescheduled for the 2pm tour - good! I don't typically do tours, but in an effort to maximize my time thought I'd give it a go. I did a city tour (not the double decker) that went pretty much everywhere I wanted to photograph. That said ... it only let us off the bus in three locations to actually take photos - and for 15 min each!! Eek!

Upnunder

Our first stop was at the Golden Gate Bridge. I basically had to run in order to get positioned to get that iconic shot. I was working three cameras - Canon 40D, Leica D-Lux 5 and iPhone. Ridiculous really, but it's just too hard for me to decide which camera to use. This trip was really about me testing to see if I could travel without the Canon in an effort to downsize for short trips like this one.

And to my surprise, the Leica lived up to the hype! I found the results were right on par with my DSLR and am super happy about that. Don't get me wrong, I will never give up my DSLR, but for a quick work trip, the Leica will be forever by my side. I love the different formats - shooting square format is super fun and 16:9 actually rivals my 10-20mm Sigma lens! I could not have been happier with the Leica performance!

Beach

Our second stop was by the Cliff House on Point Lobos Ave. Beautiful views of Ocean beach and the Pacific Ocean! Would have been nice to plan time to get a meal at the Cliff House... next time!

Back on the bus through Golden Gate Park and up to the top of Twin Peaks for panoramic views of the city. It's beautiful and not super easy to photograph - you want a wide angle to capture the whole thing, but everything looks so small. Seriously, I was just happy the city was not covered by fog! It had burned off a little after Noon and we had the perfect afternoon!

san francisco treat : day one

Lr-4279

FINALLY.  I sat my butt down and did a little photo editing on my photos from San Francisco.  I spend the first afternoon running around Union Square, then hopped (after about a 30min wait) on the cable car for a ride to Fisherman's Warf.  The cable car ride was excellent, I was able to score the front seat so I could record the ride and take photos without anyone's head in the way.

Cablecar

I walked around Fisherman's warf, which is miserably touristy. I mean really ... who buys this crap?  Anyhoo... walked thru the crab stations and took photos, but had to move fast, the smell about killed me!  I am NOT a fan of seafood and let me tell you, this is not the place for someone who is not crazy about the smell of chowder & etc.  And all of the vendors are in one block, basically on top of each other.  It's something to see, but I won't need to go back.  : )

Warf

The fog was rolling in and it was windy and getting a little cold.  I made my way to Pier 39 - supposedly one of the best views of the city.  I made it about half way out and had to pack it in - too damn cold and the fog was covering anything that would have been photo worthy - boo.  I got my my favorite iPhone shot though (here) and was able to capture a good moody shot of Alcatraz with the Leica.  Day one : success, even though I tweaked my ankle.  :(

500px

I have joined yet another photo community, 500px.com.  Seems to be the new alternative to Flickr and I am hoping it will be a little more like the early days of Flickr.  When you had photographers actually commenting and interacting with one another - without all the rif raf ... We shall see how it goes.  Lord knows I need another online presence like I need a hole in the head, but what the heck?

iPhone vs Leica

Insta_leica

One afternoon in San Francisco I wandered out to Pier 39 to snap a few photos of the bay and Golden Gate Bridge. Sadly the fog rolled in as I made my way toward the pier, not exactly the photo ops I had hoped for... I fired off a couple of shots and made my way back to the trolley.

While I waited I reviewed the pics on my iPhone and processed a few via the instagr.am app (toaster) for posting. You know me, live updates from where ever I am in the world. To my surprise I processed one of those foggy shots and got the most amazing, soft, dreamy shot (on the left). I actually had someone tell me they would pay for a photo like this.

Part of what I love about iphoneography is the unknown... you have very little control, almost no zoom and then add app processing to the mix, you never know what you will get! Well, the one downside to an app like instagr.am is the LOW resolution output. It's really meant to be a "social" sharing site and thus, high resolution images would not be necessary. But every now and then it would be nice to make a print! At 600px and 72dpi, I will be lucky to get a 4x4 out of this baby.

Luckily I had taken almost the same photo with my Leica D-Lux 5 and with a little Photoshop processing am able to get pretty close to the iPhone version - at a much better resolution! I really wish I knew the actions they use in the instagr.am app so that I would have a better chance at hitting the vignette and coloring. Might need to add a little blur too ... Anyhoo... I'm pretty happy with both, will print both and see what comes of it.

Has anyone else run into this problem I wonder?
