Living in IKEA

Media_httpapiningcom8_xajje

via mymodernmet.com

"For those of you who've seen the hit movie 500 Days of Summer, you’ll remember that cute scene where Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel pretend to live in an IKEA store. Photographer Christian Gideon must have been inspired by that scene when he created this funny series. Gideon and his friends hilariously photographed themselves living in IKEA's showrooms, acting as though we're getting a real look into their everyday lives.

Love how the "actors" almost make you believe that living in IKEA is possible!"

OMG this is hysterical! One of those, why didn't I think of that kind of things... Great job guys!

Story Behind Those Stunning Cinematic Gifs - My Modern Metropolis

Story Behind Those Stunning Cinematic Gifs

Here at theMET, we're always looking for creative projects that catch our eye. More than anything, we love posting about work that pushes boundaries, showing our audience something that has been changed, flipped or spinned into something magically different. Then, we see it as our job to find out the story behind such projects. What inspired the artist or photographer to start down that path? What do they hope others get out of their work?

A few days ago, when Met member Mark Huckabee put up a post called Astounding Animated Gifs, we knew we had to dig further. We got in touch with Jamie Beck and her partner Kevin Burg to ask them about their "cinemagraph" technique where they combine still photographs and video to create these magnificent mini films. (Did you know that the project is a combination of Kevin's background in motion graphics and Jamie's street photography?)

Before we go into that more, enjoy these lovely cinemagraphs that they sent directly to us.

What's been the response like, so far, on your animated gifs? How has the internet responded?
The online response has been really wonderful. When we first started creating these together we felt it was a new form of photography adapted for a digital age. You never know if people are going to feel the same way you do but with the incredible response it seems people also respond to this form of storytelling.

Which of them is your favorite piece and why?
We love Anna Sees Everything (last one in this post.) We feel that it captures a portrait of her in a moment that is the essence of what she does.

What do you hope others get out of these works?
We hope to transport people to the moment, to take you a step closer to the subject. We want people to feel like they get to linger and look at something, almost in a voyeuristic way. In life, when you catch a moment, it can be gone in an instant or you instinctively look away. Through our images, the moment lasts forever and you can look as long as you like.

Which gif has been the most popular and why do you think that is?
Our series with Coco Rocha was the most popular collection and the single most popular cinemagraph factoring in pageviews and Tumblr notes is Meet Me at the Bar. We think that there's a surprising aspect to it - it masquerades as a still photograph but then a car drives by. There's also a romantic element to the story the image tells... at least we feel that way.

Were you inspired by other gifs or anyone else before you started this more artistic ones?
For us it happened very organically out of a need to show something more than a photo but not quite a video, and to stay true to Jamie's photography. There have been a lot of really interesting things being done with gifs in recent years and since getting our work out there people have sent us links to other artists creating cool stuff within the gif medium. Our hope is that in the future there are many people creating original content in a similar way...in their own personal style.

What do you have next in store for us?
We hope to continually improve our storytelling abilities through our cinemagraphs. We're testing with better cameras, meeting talented people we can work with and hoping to do more editorial collaborations. We're also compiling an intimate look at New York City through this new medium. We're looking to explore other ways to utilize cinemagraphs outside of the web through devices like iPad and through forthcoming display technologies.

Thanks for the interview, Jamie and Kevin. Absolutely in love with your sweet and subtle gifs.

I have followed the "From Me to You" blog for a while now and am blown away by the moving images they create. I am so glad someone finally sat down with them to talk about how they came about. Fantastic work - love, love, love it!

things on tuesday

In the early days of this blog I used to do a post every Tuesday called "Things on Tuesday" - it's a hold over from the old Vox days.  And somewhere along the road I forgot about it.  I ran across an old post over the weekend and thought I should start it up again.  So here goes!

loves
  • Slightly under baked sugar cookies { yum }
  • Clinique moisture surge - has seriously changed my face for the better!!!  I cannot recommend this enough!
  • Dove visible care body wash - I saw the commercials about having better skin in a week and thought no way could that be true, but it was worth a shot.  Let me tell you, it is true!
  • Chris Trapper and Colin Hay this Saturday { yeah! }
  • Pinterest - I'm totally addicted!
  • Getting to work on a sign package where I can think outside the box and have fun with the signs rather than staying within all of the normal rules.  My brain has seriously been working overtime and I'm having so much fun!
  • And ... I'm just going to say it... the Royal Wedding.  They are such a cute couple and I love weddings...
loathes
  • Road construction - I know it's necessary, but it still sucks
  • When I make a mistake, say something wrong or etc. that I cannot seem to let it go.  I keep replaying and reanalyzing - so annoying!
  • That I have to wake up at 4:45 AM tomorrow to purchase tickets for this summer's Ravinia concerts.  { oy! }
  • That I cannot seem to get my ass in gear and get into the shape I want to be in
  • Cleaning... yet I hate clutter and a dirty home ... hmmm
  • A full month of rain
  • That my life is either go, go, go or total boredom
Till next Tuesday!

The King's Speech

Media_httpwwwkingsspe_injea

Finally watched The King's Speech over the weekend. It's not my typical movie genre, but I did enjoy the performances of Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush - really incredible! Colin Firth with that stammer was so hard to watch - I cannot imagine how that might mess with your brain, playing a role like that.

Why do speech impediments make us so uncomfortable? For me I think it's just hard to watch the struggle to get the word out - you know it's in there, but why won't it come out? I met a guy at a meeting once who managed his stammer beautifully. It was hardly noticeable, but every now and then you would see a hesitation and then he would change the word. I was kind of amazed at how well he was able to calmly and quickly pause and swap words - it's like having a thesaurus look up on call at all times. Brilliant really.

social media & business

Img_3825sm

As my life becomes more 'online' I find it difficult to keep lines from crossing. Friends. Family. Coworkers. Clients. Who do you friend on Facebook? Linked In? Twitter? Flickr? Ack?!?

I have tried to keep a pretty strict rule about who to add to which social media outlet. Facebook is for friends - since we all just ramble on about nothing. Twitter is for following people, subjects and news that interests me. Linked In is for business contacts, with a few friends tossed in for good measure. That said, I will not endorse someone I have not done work for/with simply because they are my friend. Just because I think you're cool doesn't mean I can vouch for your work. But I find that these rules are blurring more and more every day..
Recently I added a friend to facebook who is also a client. I was very much on the fence about doing it, but figured it couldn't really cause problems right? It shouldn't really be viewed any different than adding a coworker.... but, is it? You see, we now get information about each other that we might not know otherwise. And sometimes that information includes our coworkers. So, saw you went to dinner at that cool new restaurant with coworker x - how was it? Seems harmless and doesn't interfere with business at all. But... where it gets complicated is when the coworkers of friends are also clients. Can you ask them about that cool new eatery without being a social media stalker? Should you just ignore that you have this information and not ask? Is there some social media etiquette guide that we should consult for such situations? Where should these lines be drawn? Just wonder if I am the only one that runs into this connection conundrum?

loosing a few

Beforeandafter

...inches for the summer!

What is it about women and hair? Why does it hold such a prominent position in defining who we are?

I find that when my hair is long it seems like a big deal to cut it. I go back an forth, should I or shouldn't i ... and I cannot figure out why it's such a struggle. It's just hair. It will grow back. And I totally trust my hair guy, so it's not like he's going to give me a pixie by accident...

I have been on the fence for the last couple of months about weather to keep my hair long or short. Last year I did a little test to see how long it would get over the course of the year and six inches later... the long locks were back in business. Lately people have been telling me "oh your hair is getting so long" and I think that was drawing some attention to it for me. That and the fact that I had it up in a ponytail every day for the whole week. That was my breaking point the last time I cut it short and so when I saw that pattern coming back, I decided to hit the salon again! Short and sassy is back baby!

I've been tracked

Screen_shot_2011-04-21_at_8

Yep... my iPhone 4 has been tracking me since I got it... lovely!  The level of detail is completely insane!!!  I clearly use my phone around the Chicagoland area ...

Screen_shot_2011-04-21_at_8

What surprises me most is that I think it tracks even via every photo you take... Clearly I was not talking on the phone this much in Hawaii...

So... go download the app and show us where you've been!

sad

The Loneliest Whale in the World. In 2004, The New York Times wrote an article about the loneliest whale in the world. Scientists have been tracking her since 1992 and they discovered the problem: She isn’t like any other baleen whale. Unlike all other whales, she doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have a family. She doesn’t belong to any tribe, pack or gang. She doesn’t have a lover. She never had one. Her songs come in groups of two to six calls, lasting for five to six seconds each. But her voice is unlike any other baleen whale. It is unique—while the rest of her kind communicate between 12 and 25hz, she sings at 52hz. You see, that’s precisely the problem. No other whales can hear her. Every one of her desperate calls to communicate remains unanswered. Each cry ignored. And, with every lonely song, she becomes sadder and more frustrated, her notes going deeper in despair as the years go by. Just imagine that massive mammal, floating alone and singing—too big to connect with any of the beings it passes, feeling paradoxically small in the vast stretches of empty, open ocean

This has to be one of the saddest thing's I've ever read....
